The window to file a new claim for the Camp Lejeune water contamination has officially closed as of August 10, 2024. However, for the hundreds of thousands of veterans and family members who filed on time, March 2026 marks the beginning of the most critical phase: The Bellwether Trials and the Final Settlement Matrix.
As of early 2026, the U.S. Navy JAG Corps and the Department of Justice (DOJ) have paid out over $530 million through the “Elective Option” (EO). But with more than 400,000 claims filed, most victims are still waiting for a global resolution.
The Truth About the 2024 Deadline
Many advertisements still floating online are misleading. The law is clear: No new administrative claims can be filed in 2026. If you did not submit your CLJA Claim Form to the Navy by August 10, 2024, you are legally barred from seeking compensation under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act.
Current Status: The 2026 Bellwether Trials
For those with active lawsuits in the Eastern District of North Carolina, the first Bellwether trials are scheduled for late 2026. These “test cases” focus on five core diseases:
- Kidney Cancer
- Bladder Cancer
- Leukemia
- Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
- Parkinson’s Disease
The verdicts from these trials will set the “market value” for all remaining claims. If the juries award high amounts, the government will be pressured to release a Global Settlement Matrix in late 2026.
The Elective Option (EO) Payouts in 2026
The Navy is currently sending out expedited offers to those with specific conditions. Payouts are structured as follows:
- Tier 1 (Cancer): $150,000 to $450,000.
- Tier 2 (Parkinson’s/Kidney Disease): $100,000 to $400,000.
Warning: Avoid “Late-Filing” Scams
Be wary of any service claiming they can “reopen” your claim in 2026 for a fee. The only exception to the 2024 deadline is if you have already filed a claim and it was denied; you then have exactly 180 days from the date of denial to file a federal lawsuit.
